MAKARIOS-KARAMANLIS: Ethnarch of Cyprus Archbishop Makarios, has expressed his complete satisfaction with the recent statements by Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis to the American news agency regarding policy on the Cyprus issue and added that he believed the Cypriot people shared his satisfaction. HARRY TRUMAN: Chicago, 31 – Former US president Mr Harry Truman, speaking during a dinner given in his honor by the Greek associations of Chicago on the occasion of the October 28, Remembrance Day, emphasized that (…) the Truman doctrine was part of a US policy aimed at protecting the free world and that this was still being implemented. «For that reason,» he said, «I can only express my regret over the situation brought about by the recent events in Turkey and which have exacerbated relations between Greece and Turkey. I had personally done what I could so that these two countries remain free and I regret that the State Department authorities did not consider it necessary to attribute responsibility where it was due and to take the necessary measures.»
