HELPING TO FORGET: (First-page commentary in Kathimerini): «The measures announced by the Karamanlis government are not for the purpose of political order nor any other substantial issue. (…) What the government is doing is nothing more than completing a policy adapted to the reality of this moment in time. The time that has passed since the foreign-instigated attack on Greece has given the relevant state officials an opportunity to investigate matters in depth and draw useful conclusions on which to base its current policy of helping the nation to forget. The government will release all communists whom it is 100 percent sure will not be a threat to national security or domestic order: those who don’t really know why they are communists, illiterate villagers who do not know how they found themselves to be in the service of the Communist Party of Greece, people who have repented and others who have committed no real crimes but who have paid for the propaganda spread by Red slogans. The unrepentant (…), those who have committed crimes and all ranks of leaders of the movement will stay where they are.»
