KARAMANLIS’S PROJECTS: The prime minister, Mr Constantine Karamanlis, chaired a meeting yesterday at the Ministry of Industry to examine progress in major reconstruction projects… According to an official announcement, it was ascertained that preliminary work on the Megdova irrigation and hydroelectric project in Thessaly is progressing satisfactorily. The official launch will be held on December 18. A contract between the state and the Fertilizer Company has been ratified to exploit lignite deposits in the Ptolemaida area…It was also decided that the Public Power Corporation (PPC) would announce a competition to be held within January for the construction and funding of a 65,000-kilowatt power plant. As for the longer-term hydroelectric project on the Acheloos River, with a capacity of 180,000KW, the government intends to carry this out as soon as possible… Also discussed was the power supply to the island of Crete, for which a budget of 5 million dollars has been allocated… With regard to the immediate establishment of a shipyard in Greece, the government has also decided to invite the two interested firms to declare within 10 days whether they accept the government’s terms.
