Municipalities must keep track of bills
When you buy something, you have to pay for it. It’s the same all over the world. Well, almost. In Greece some municipalities sold water coming from EYDAP, the state water company, to their citizens without paying the money back to the main supplier. It’s their latest trick in an attempt to avoid -165 million in debts on the grounds of exorbitant price hikes. No matter how the controversy between the municipalities and EYDAP ends, there is a message here for the local authorities. Their job is not just to collect people’s taxes but to also cover the municipalities’ debts. Municipalities must keep a clean record of their bills and not just hire short-term workers with an eye on the next elections.
