SAMPSON SENTENCED TO DEATH: Nicosia, 21 – The Cypriot Supreme Court today ratified the death sentence of Cypriot journalist Nikos Sampson. The court rejected the charge that Sampson’s gun had been loaded, but did accept that Sampson had aimed his gun at a police officer. The young Cypriot heard the verdict without any display of emotion. His attorney said he would appeal to the Crown Council. The court comprised a British, a Turkish-Cypriot and a Greek-Cypriot judge. The verdict was passed with a majority of one. Sampson’s attorneys sent a telegram this afternoon to Cypriot Governor Field Marshal Sir John Harding informing him of their intention to lodge an appeal. Nightclubs, cinemas and cafes in the Cypriot capital were closed this evening in a show of protest against the court’s ruling. US AND KOREA: London, 21 – The United States, as head of the joint administration of UN forces in Korea, in which Greece is also represented, today unilaterally condemned the Korea truce… as a result of the continuing violation of the provisions of the agreement by the Communist forces.
