Choices for a greener future

When the Pendeli forest is burned down and then re-zoned for building. When Athens’s open spaces and green areas are scarce. When metropolitan parks, like the one at Hellenikon, are still at the mock-up stage. When an environmentally degraded city like Athens is crammed with buildings that do not meet modern insulation and bioclimatic standards. When most people shun scientific warnings about the recurrent heat waves and the changes in the microclimate of Attica. When we fail to take measures to improve the environment in our flat or the neighborhood by installing double-glazed windows or planting flowers and trees. When we deem that the only solution is a greedy air conditioner working at full blast. When the development program of the Public Power Corporation has been shelved for years… Then we shall keep consuming energy at record-breaking rates and shall continue to live under the constant threat of a blackout like some Third World metropolis.
