LABOR PARTY FOR CYPRUS: Announcements by the British Labor Party recognizing the principle of self-determination for the Cypriot people have been welcomed in Greece. Referring to the sentiments of the his people, Greek Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis yesterday expressed his deep satisfaction with the decision by the British Labor Party and emphasized his absolute conviction – without ignoring existing difficulties – that this issue will be resolved in a satisfactory manner. At the same time, according to a report from Kathimerini’s New York correspondent, Cypriot Archbishop Makarios said the Labor Party’s decision «led to optimism that the day of liberation was at hand.» SPUTNIK: Russia’s launch of the first satellite to orbit the Earth has topped all the news bulletins here. An NBC commentator in the USA said the news meant that the Russians had won the first round in the friendly competition in the World Geophysical Year. NBC receivers picked up the satellite’s signal at about 1.15 a.m. Greenwich time today. The satellite is only visible at dawn and dusk.
