CHINA AND UN: United Nations, New York, 23 – The General Assembly of the United Nations today approved by 44 votes to 29 a US proposal to postpone debate on the accession of communist China for another year. There were nine abstentions, including Greece. The United States once again imposed its will, although its victory was not as decisive as in previous years. In comparison with last year’s vote, there was a reduction of four votes in favor of the proposal and an increase of two votes against it, as well as three more abstentions. The representatives of Nepal, Ceylon, Romania, Yugoslavia, Belarus, Burma, the United Arab Republic, Poland, Cambodia, Iraq, Ukraine, India, Iceland and Hungary spoke out against the proposal today. Most Latin American and Western European delegations were in an uncomfortable position this year as they did not want to compromise themselves by defending American’s stance and remained silent throughout the entire debate. Only the representatives of Britain, Canada and New Zealand spoke out in favor of the US stance today. Greece’s abstention has increased fears among the Western bloc that Greek foreign policy will be more independent in the UN. The Greek stance satisfied the anti-colonial group.
