There is no time to waste

The conservative prime minister appears to have finally grasped the public’s growing disappointment with the performance of the New Democracy government and has responded by making some key changes. There is not a single day to waste. The economy as well as the social security and the education systems are all in a sorry state. The administration of Costas Karamanlis must avoid any further foot-dragging and promote the requisite changes as soon as possible. Voters are expecting action, not words, and they also expect to see determination and integrity. This will quite probably be ruling New Democracy’s last chance to close the gap with the socialist opposition party ahead of the next parliamentary elections. Conservative cadres must all do their very best in all key sectors or face the consequences. Greek voters understand that these are difficult times for the country, but they will not tolerate any future signs of arrogance or weakness.
