Security forces due for revamp

Something needs to change at last in the way the Greek Police operates. Recent events have demonstrated quite clearly that the current situation, one of inadequacy and a lack of professionalism, can no longer continue. Right now Greece is facing the resurgence of terrorism – it is a new and very serious threat. The country is also faced with a crisis in public safety, which has undermined the people’s faith in the state’s institutions and its ability to protect them and their interests. In the face of such serious and growing threats, the Greek Police appears disorganized, lacking in proper training, weak on discipline and unable to respond to the demands of the public. These structural problems need to be fixed at once, with a reorganization of the force led by new people. This is no time for making compromises or for trying to play it safe. The ministers in charge of the police force need to choose the best officials and officers on the force’s staff and assign them the task of a complete overhaul of the system.
