Will the state also take action?

The united mass participation of individuals and both private and public organizations in Earth Hour across the country shows that Greek society is responding to the great environmental challenges afflicting the globe. Millions of our nation’s citizens have said that they are willing to sacrifice some of their luxuries in order to send the message that the problems are not insurmountable. At the same time, the people are sending a message to the Greek state urging it to do something about the ecological challenges that face us on a domestic level. The continued practice of illegal construction in forest areas, the pollution of rivers (such as the recent dumping of toxic industrial waste into the Asopos River), the sunken cruise ship sitting on the seabed off the coast of Santorini and thousands of other problems are still awaiting some kind of government action. Today, the people will be doing their duty. We shall wait to see when the state will undertake its share of the burden.
