University is no place for politics

The situation in Greece’s higher education institutes is really quite lamentable, especially at the present time, when they are gearing up for student elections. University campuses all around the country have degenerated into a giant marketplace, where the student groups affiliated to political parties use every ruse imaginable to attract other students to their ballot boxes. Indeed, the noise from the party criers, the chatter of crowds that gather around their booths or tables, music playing and slogans being chanted over loudspeakers often drown out the sound of professors’ voices, making it impossible for lessons to be conducted. The party-affiliated student groups need to show some respect for their peers who are not interested in this type of political activity and who are there in order to learn something rather than to align themselves politically. The interests of the few should not hinder the needs of the majority and the current situation should not be allowed to continue.
