Hard times demand courage

The recent behavior demonstrated by some of our most illustrious members of Parliament is just another a sign of the obstacles that Prime Minister George Papandreou’s Socialist administration must overcome if it wants to successfully push through its program of long-overdue and much-needed rigid fiscal discipline. Unfortunately our already entrenched political system keeps blocking every effort to do away with nonsensical measures and wasteful policies, such as the additional two monthly wages granted per year to parliamentary staff – on top of the two-month bonus awarded to all salaried workers in Greece. Our politicians do not seem to realize that if the country is currently teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, it is first and foremost because of their own irresponsibility and irresoluteness. They must finally get their collective act together and face the coming challenges with sober heads and realism. Times have changed radically and the present situation requires great responsibility and political courage.
