Athens hosts international children’s sports competition

Dozens of children attending British schools around the world will be competing from tomorrow in an annual sports tournament that is being held in Athens this year.

St. Catherine’s British School in Lykovrissi, northern Athens, is hosting the annual sports tournament for Council of British International Schools (COBIS), which has more than 300 members.

Some 300 children and their escorts (about 800 people in total) from 20 countries around the world – including Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Dubai, Norway and Uganda – will be in Athens for the sporting events, which will get underway following an opening ceremony that will include live music, at 8.15 a.m. on Thursday morning at the Olympic Stadium.

The competition is divided into a Primary Games for pupils between the ages of 9-11 and Secondary Games for pupils between the ages of 12-13. The children will compete as teams against each other in athletics, swimming and football (soccer) at the Olympic Stadium, the Olympic Aquatic Center and at the former Panathinaikos FC training ground in Paiania.

From Greece, St. Catherine’s will participate in both competitions. Campion School will take part in the secondary competition.
