Olympiakos advances in women’s Champions Cup

Olympiakos will be Greece’s sole representative in the final four of the women’s Champions Cup as holder Vouliagmeni splashed out of the competition in the quarterfinals.

Olympiakos, which came fourth in last year’s Champions Cup, dismissed Germany’s Bayer Uerdingen, as it had won 18-8 in Germany and triumphed 17-6 in Piraeus on March 19.

The Reds will face Orizzonte Catania in the semifinal on April 22 at Sabadell in Spain, where the final four will take place. The Italians last won the trophy in 2008.

Orizzonte, once again the favorite for the cup, saw off Vouliagmeni in the quarterfinals, as it beat the Greek side 12-8 in Sicily on March 20 after losing 13-11 in Greece.

Vouliagmeni will now have to return its crown after two consecutive triumphs in the Champions Cup in 2009 and 2010.
