Greek women return home early from Eurobasket

Greece bowed out of the women’s European Championship in Poland following the first round after going down 64-55 to France on June 20.

The women’s national team had one win and two losses in Pool D of the first stage, beating Latvia 67-57 on June 18 and losing to Croatia 65-63 on June 19.

The results meant Greece finished last in its group, level on points with third-placed Croatia. The loss to the Croats condemned Greece to elimination, as the top three of each four-team pool advanced to the next phase.

The Hellenic Basketball Federation lodged a formal complaint with FIBA Europe for the referee decisions in the game against Croatia, suggesting Greece deserved to win that match, which has now proved decisive.

In the previous Eurobasket two years ago, Greece had finished a surprising fifth.
