Asteras acquitted of bribery

Asteras Tripolis has regained its Super League status as the Hellenic Football Federation?s Appeals Committee reversed the decision that had found the Peloponnesian side guilty of bribery, reinstating it to the Super League on October 11.

The original decision, reached by the Super League?s Disciplinary Committee, had sent Asteras to the second division.

The federation’s committee, which had also reversed the decision to relegate Olympiakos Volou and Kavala until the Professional Sports Commission declined to give the two clubs a licence to compete, has also acquitted Asteras president Giorgos Borovilos, who had originally received a three-year ban for allegedly giving Achilleas Beos, then president of Olympiakos Volou, 500,000 euros.

The verdict suggests that recorded conversations between Kavala owner Makis Psomiadis and others, saying that Asteras had bribed Olympiakos Volou in order to win a game between the two sides in March, do not constitute sufficient evidence to prove the Tripoli side’s guilt.

As a result, Asteras can now return to action in the Super League.

Meanwhile the league has again postponed a meeting, most recently set for Tuesday, that was supposed to decide which clubs would replace Olympiakos Volou and Kavala.
