Gillet punishes wasteful AEK
AEK lost once again in Europe on December 1, this time 2-1 at home to Anderlecht, to stay with no points after five games in its Europa League group.
Guillaume Gillet scored in the 3rd and 36th minute to give Anderlecht its fifth win in as many games at an almost empty Olympic Stadium, graced by a few dozen Belgian fans who enjoyed every minute of it.
AEK had temporarily equalized through Dimitris Sialmas in the 19th minute, but the team of coach Nikos Costenoglou should have made at least one more of its good chances count in order to get its first point in the group.
The introduction of Brazilian playmaker Leonardo in the second half improved AEK’s game and the host was unlucky not to score in the 67th minute when the ball hit the woodwork after a Leonardo effort.
Anderlecht could have extended its lead three minutes from time, but Tom De Sutter’s backheel hit the post.
