Panathinaikos survives Maroussi scare

Winless Maroussi gave Panathinaikos a good scare on December 19, but eventually the reigning Greens emerged victorious from the game that put an end to a similarly interesting ninth round for the Basket League.

Despite the 36 points scored by Maroussi’s Nestoras Kommatos, Panathinaikos won 93-84 at the Olympic Sports Hall to stay hot on the heels of leader Olympiakos.

The Reds thrashed Ikaros Kallitheas 105-57 away on December 18 in spite of the absence of Vassilis Spanoulis, who was rested, and Lazaros Papadopoulos, who is injured and will be out of action until February.

MVP of the week Dionte Christmas scored 24 points and led AGO Rethymnou to an impressive 13-point win at Peristeri (75-62) over a team that is sinking in financial trouble, according to its coach Argyris Pedoulakis.

Kolossos is level on points with Panathinaikos after seeing off PAOK with a 76-67 score on Rhodes, while KAO Dramas scored its second win of the season, dismissing neighboring Kavala 81-58.

Finally, Aris confirmed its recent improvement with a comfortable 83-67 victory at home over Ilisiakos and is looking forward to the crucial Eurocup game on December 20 against Rudupis for a spot in the next round of Europe’s second-tier competition.
