Rethymno eyes third spot after colossal win

AGO Rethymnou scored a significant home win over Kolossos Rhodes on Saturday to stake a claim to the third place on the table for the regular season, while Olympiakos and Panathinaikos prepare for their Euroleague playoffs.

Rethymno is now just one point behind Kolossos after beating the Rhodes club 76-70 at home. Its win by six points means it will have a better head-to-head record should the two teams finish level on points, and with two rounds of games remaining, Kolossos still has Panathinaikos to play in Athens.

Olympiakos overcame the last significant hurdle before the end of the regular season with relative ease as it beat fifth-placed Panionios 73-64 at home on Friday and will likely finish top. It is now bracing for its Euroleague quarterfinal series with Siena that starts in Italy on Wednesday.

Panathinaikos, in second, thrashed Peristeri 97-64 away on Friday and on Tuesday it is hosting Maccabi Tel Aviv for the first match in the Euroleague playoff best-of-five series.

In other league games on Saturday Aris confirmed its place in the playoffs with a 90-69 win at Maroussi and Ikaros won 69-61 at Ilisiakos.

On Sunday PAOK, in seventh, defeated visiting KAO Dramas 77-59 at Thessaloniki.
