Rehhagel signs a two-year deal with soccer federation

Veteran Bundesliga coach Otto Rehhagel yesterday signed a two-year contract to coach the Greek national squad, the Greek football federation said. The federation said 63-year-old Rehhagel will coach the team until December 2003 and if the Greeks qualify for the European championships in 2004 in Portugal, his contract would be extended until July 2004. No details of the contract were released by the federation, but local press reports said that the German coach would be getting $360,000 a year. Rehhagel was appointed coach of the Greek side in August and led the squad to two 2002 World Cup qualifying matches without having signed his contract, a 5-1 away loss to Finland and a satisfying 2-2 draw at England. He replaced Vassilis Daniil, who resigned after a 2-0 home loss to England in the 2002 World Cup qualifying round. Greece did not qualify for the finals. (AFP)
