Panelefsiniakos upsets basketball high-flyer Panionios

Panelefsiniakos turned things upside down in the battle to avoid the drop from the basketball league as its victory over third-placed Panionios has thrown the relegation dogfight wide open.

The Elefsina club, playing for the first time ever in the top flight, managed to defeat Panionios 76-72 at home over the weekend and boost its chances of staying up. It is now level on points with Kavala and Peristeri at the bottom of the table, with two teams set to go down to the A2 division.

Peristeri lost 85-60 at Panathinaikos, who gave captain Dimitris Diamantidis some rest, and Kavala suffered a 71-60 loss at home to neighboring KAO Dramas.

Olympiakos defeated Aris 84-68 at Thessaloniki on Monday for its 20th win in 21 games, and needs three more to mathematically seal the top spot in the regular season.

Ilisiakos will also feel safe after beating Apollon Patras 75-69 at home while Ikaros Kallitheas upset Kolossos on Rhodes winning 73-69 to climb to sixth. On the previous Wednesday AGO Rethymnou had beaten PAOK 66-64.
