Costas Mitroglou scored his second hat-trick in four days to lead Olympiakos to a 6-0 trouncing of visiting Veria on Sunday for the Super League, while second-placed PAOK defeated Panathinaikos 2-1 in the day’s biggest game.
The Reds scored their sixth win in seven games to retain their three-point lead over PAOK after Joel Campbell (twice) and Yiannis Maniatis scored to complement Mitroglou’s new star performance, following the three goals scored at Anderlecht for the Champions League on Wednesday.
This was also Mitroglou’s third hat-trick in the league, taking him to the top of the scorers’ chart with nine goals.
PAOK preserved its 100 percent home record, thanks to a penalty miss by Panathinaikos’s scorer Marcus Berg 10 minutes from time. The Swedish striker sent the ball wide of the post, being unable to score his second of the night after giving the Greens the lead in the 21st minute.
Miroslav Stoch equalized from the spot six minutes later and Stefanos Athanasiadis gave PAOK all three points two minutes into the second half at Toumba.
Ergotelis climbed to the third spot after downing fellow Cretan team Platanias Hanion 3-1 at home, while neighboring OFI snatched a 1-1 draw at Panthrakikos but remained second from bottom.
Aris may still be last but has managed its first win this season as it came from behind to triumph 2-1 at Panionios.
Xanthi also came from behind to win, but trailed 2-0 to Apollon at home before scoring three times and rising to seventh in the table.
Asteras Tripolis and Atromitos shared a 2-2 draw in the weekend’s most entertaining encounter, while Levadiakos beat promoted Kalloni Lesvou 1-0 courtesy of a goal by former Greece striker Vangelis Mantzios.
