Table tennis was never the most popular or the most successful sport in Greece, but as of Monday night the men’s national team can boast being Europe’s number 2, after remarkably snatching its first ever medal in a European Championship.
Consisting of such experienced players as Kalinikos Kreanga, Panayiotis Gionis and Costas Papageorgiou, the national team kept scoring win after win at the championships held in Austria.
The amazing march of the Greeks to the continent’s summit was only halted by the game’s giant, Germany, who has been winning the gold medal in every championship since 2007.
Germany beat Greece 3-1 in Monday’s final, but that does not dent at all the pride Greek players feel for their unprecedented achievement.
“We are very happy and proud of what we have achieved, said Gionis, with Papageorgiou adding that «this silver medal is a great moment for the sport in Greece.”
