Reds struggle to beat PAS, but open 10-point gap
Olympiakos has opened a ten-point gap at the top of the Super League after the midweek fixtures on Wednesday that saw it beat PAS Giannina while second-placed PAOK could only snatch a late equalizer at Atromitos.
The Reds needed two penalties and an offside goal to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the Brana Ilic opener and beat combative PAS in Piraeus, with Javier Saviola, Paulo Machado and Joel Campbell on the scoresheet. Tasos Kritikos reduced the arrears toward the end for 10-man PAS, for a final 3-2 score at the Karaiskakis Stadium.
Atromitos led PAOK from the 26th minute through a Dimitris Papadopoulos goal, but conceded a 90th-minute equalizer to Giorgos Tzavellas as PAOK got the one point it deserved from the game at Peristeri. The result leaves PAOK seven points ahead of third-placed Atromitos.
Two points behind Atromitos is Panathinaikos, who scored its second 4-0 away win within 10 days, this time thrashing Levadiakos at Livadia. The Greens of Athens had Tasos Lagos as their man of the match, but he stained his two-goal performance with a red card. Victor Klonaridis and Christos Donis were also on target for Panathinaikos.
Xanthi, in sixth, saw off OFI Crete 2-1, although the Iraklio club has got terrible complaints from the match referee.
In other games, Apollon grabbed a 2-2 draw at Ergotelis, Panetolikos defeated Platanias 3-0 and Panthrakikos climbed to seventh downing Kalloni Lesvou 2-0. Consequently both Thrace clubs, Xanthi and Panthrakikos, are among the top seven of the table for the first time ever.
On Thursday Panionios greets Veria and Aris hosts Asteras Tripolis.
