PAO, OFI, Atromitos and Apollon advance in cup

Panathinaikos, Atromitos, Apollon Smyrnis and OFI Crete are the first four teams to book their places in the quarterfinals of the Greek Cup after the return legs of the round of 16 that took place on Wednesday and Thursday.

A solitary goal by Abdul Jaleel Ajagun, the Nigerian attacking midfielder, was enough for Panathinaikos to double its wins over second-division club Iraklis Psachnon on Wednesday, this time away from home, following a 3-0 home win. The Greens will face the winner of the Olympiakos Volou vs Asteras Magoulas tie.

Atromitos had Sokratis Fytanidis and Brito to thank for their goals in the 2-0 home win over Panetolikos on Wednesday and is now bracing to face Olympiakos that will almost certainly overcome Asteras Tripolis. The Reds hold a 4-0 lead from the first leg.

Apollon came close to elimination on Thursday as it lost 1-0 at Niki Volou of the second division, but this was enough to see it through to the quarterfinals with a 3-2 aggregate score in the end.

Kalloni Lesvou had beaten OFI 1-0 on Crete, but in the return leg that took place at the Olympic Stadium of Athens on Thursday it was OFI that finished the 90 minutes on top with a 1-0 score. The tie went to extra time and OFI made it 2-0 in the second period to clinch the ticket to the last eight of the competition.

The other ties of the round of 16 will be played next week.
