Ranieri on Greece job: ‘Everything needed to be changed, I only had four matches’
Claudio Ranieri, the Italian manager of Premier League surprise package Leicester City, has spoken of his short-lived tenure at the helm of Greece’s national squad.
“Unfortunately in our world we get given labels very quickly,” Ranieri said after the Foxes’ sensational 3-1 win at Manchester City on Saturday.
“I wanted to try a national team job and I chose Greece. Everything needed to be changed, I only had four matches – how could I have done something in those conditions?” he said without giving more details.
“The coach who came after me didn’t do any better,” he said in a reference to Uruguayan Sergio Markarian.
Ranieri was sacked as Greece coach following four successive defeats, including a shock 1-0 loss to the Faroe Islands in a Euro 2016 qualifier in November 2014.
Leicester are top of the Premier League, five points clear with 13 matches remaining.
