Olympiakos coach Silva quits, Victor Sanchez takes over
Olympiakos manager Marco Silva suddenly quit his job on Thursday, citing personal reasons, just as he was about to enter his second season on the bench of the Greek champion. He is replaced by former Deportivo La Coruna manager, Victor Sanchez.
Silva reportedly made his decision on Thursday as the team was already in its preseason preparation spell in Austria where it will stay for a total of 10 days. Olympiakos chief executive Yiannis Vrentzos informed the players of the Piraeus club, and they were in shock.
A little later Olympiakos officially broke the news through a statement, referring to personal reasons of the Portuguese coach. For most of the spring he had been linked to the job at FC Porto, but the Dragons have hired Nuno Espirito Santo.
The Greek club added that Spaniard Sanchez is taking over. The former Panathinaikos player used to be an assistant coach to Michel when the latter was the Olympiakos manager.
In Portugal some speculate Silva may replace Fernando Santos on the Portuguese national team's bench.
Olympiakos spokesman Costas Karapapas commented on Thursday that there was something fishy from the first day of the preseason, last Monday, when Silva had expressed his unease, so the club turned to Sanchez immediately – which explains the speed of the 39-year-old’s replacement.
