Rio dream is over for Greek hoopsters

A disappointing Greece crashed out of the Olympic Qualification tournament in Italy on Friday going down to Croatia 66-61 in the semifinal, and will have to sit out another Olympics, this time Rio 2016.

The national team had a horrible start to the game, trailing by as many as 24 points late in the first half (37-13) to the free-scoring Croats.

The players of coach Fotis Katsikaris attempted a comeback and in the third period they even edged ahead by two points (48-46) staging an impressive 35-9 partial score. But that was not enough.

Croatia recovered, it regained the lead and snatched victory without problems in the end, to advance to the final for the ticket to Rio.

Stratos Perperoglou was the only Greek in double digits scoring 13 points.

A question mark now hangs over the future of Katsikaris on the bench, as he is not bound by a contract.
