Famous Greek soccer officials found guilty of match-fixing

The president and the owner of Asteras Tripolis, the former owner of Levadiakos, the suspended mayor of Volos and former owner of the local club, and two former Olympiakos defenders are among the Greek soccer figures found guilty of match-fixing or illegal betting in the case related to the 2010-2011 season, known in Greece as Koriopolis.

Greece’s answer to Italy’s Calciopoli was a scandal that concerned fixing games for betting earnings and became known through a series of recordings of telephone conversations tapped by the National Intelligence Service (EYP).

On Wednesday an Athens appeals court found the protagonists of that story guilty of being involved in a scam, though not of setting up a criminal organization as was the original accusation. The penalties on the guilty have not been announced yet.

Volos mayor (suspended due to the criminal cases he is involved in) and former Olympiakos Volou owner and president Achilleas Beos was found guilty of bribery and of fixing the Asteras Tripolis vs Olympiakos Volou and Panserraikos vs Olympiakos Volou games in 2011, as well as of being repeatedly involved in illegal betting.

Super League high-flyer Asteras Tripolis will have to implement changes to its ownership and administration, as President and former referee Giorgos Borovilos and main stakeholder Dimitris Bakos are guilty of bribery to fix the Panserraikos vs Asteras, Kavala vs Asteras and Asteras vs Olympiakos Volou games.

Levadiakos strongman Yiannis Kobotis, who has formally sold his stake in the Super League club, was found guilty of fixing the Ilioupoli vs Levadiakos game. The former president of Ilioupoli soccer club Giorgos Tsakoyiannis was found guilty of bribery, illegal betting, money laundering, illegal weapon ownership etc.

Former Greek international Avraam Papadopoulos, currently of Brisbane Roar, and Apollon Smyrnis player Costas Mendrinos were found guilty of illegal betting.

Other people found guilty of various charges include coach Nikos Pantelis, agent Angelos Travlos etc.
