Unwanted striker emerging as hero
It has been an incredible few months for Ajax’s 32-year-old Greek striker Yiannis Anastassiou, who last March was told that he would be released by the club but is now emerging as a hero. Some credit for Ajax’s likely return to the Champions League’s next round – the Dutch club, at home to Sparta last night, was a win away – can go to Anastassiou. He scored twice in Ajax’s 2-0 home win over Thun last month and struck again in Ajax’s return-leg win in Switzerland two weeks later.
