Serb player’s tragic life reaches end

Serb basketball player Boban Jankovic, who spent the early 1990s playing with Panionios but was forced to retire after a self-inflicted injury confined him to a wheelchair, suffered a heart attack late Wednesday night and was pronounced dead early yesterday. Jankovic, who continued to live in Athens after retirement, headbutted a basket post amid the frenzy of a domestic match with Panionios back in April 1993, which prompted full paralysis of both his legs. Jankovic gained considerable weight during his life spent in the wheelchair. The Serb’s funeral, to be held tomorrow morning in Nea Smyrni, the Athens district where his former Greek club is based, will be funded by the local municipality.
