Aris draws with Panathinaikos in playoff opener

Panathinaikos and Aris shared the points in the first match of soccer’s Super League playoffs last night, drawing 1-1 in Thessaloniki’s Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium. After a balanced game of few chances, the two teams got what they deserved, along with plenty of yellow cards. One of those booked, Aris’s Ronaldo Guiaro, received his second card for protesting at the referee just after the final whistle and will consequently miss the next game. Sergio Koke headed the ball in after 74 minutes to open the score for Aris following a corner kick by Felipe Sanchon, for his ninth goal of the season. Yet with just four minutes left, Aris’s Marco Aurelio fouled Dimitris Papadopoulos in the penalty box. Papadopoulos got up to take the kick and equalized for Panathinaikos. The other match of the first round of the playoffs between AEK and Panionios was contested late last night at the Olympic Stadium.
