Injury relief in Greece squad

Greece received a boost following Saturday’s 3-2 defeat in a friendly against Hungary as the squad learned that the injuries to goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis and captain Angelos Basinas were not serious enough to keep the pair out of Euro 2008. Nikopolidis, who limped off in the 23rd minute, was later told he had pulled a thigh muscle that will keep him sidelined for a week. Basinas, who was injured in the second half, went down clutching his ankle. X-rays revealed that there was no fracture, though bad bruising will keep the player sidelined for several days. Greece coach Otto Rehhagel said Hungary took the game seriously and acknowledged that Greece’s opponent «exposed all our weaknesses.» Rehhagel added that he would not name his final 23-man squad for Euro 2008 until Wednesday. He currently has 24 players with him. Greece begins the defense of its European title on June 10 against Sweden in Salzburg.
