Panellinios beats Telekom Bonn 69-54 in Eurocup

Panellinios basketball club took its first step toward the group stage of the Eurocup, Europe’s second most important club competition. The Athens club defeated Telekom Baskets Bonn 69-54 yesterday in Kypseli in the first leg of the first qualifying round and will have a significant lead in the second leg in Germany next week. Having worked on their defense with coach Ilias Zouros, the Greeks built their lead from the first period, which ended 29-14. They led 40-24 at halftime as the Germans could not find any easy scoring opportunities. However the team of former Panathinaikos star Michael Koch, now in coaching, fought back in the third quarter to cut the deficit in half (51-43), only for Panellinios to regain its 16-point lead with two minutes to go (66-50), thanks to a three-pointer by guard Giorgos Kalaitzis. Jurica Golemac led the scoring for the hosts with 16 points. Earl J. Rowland bagged 11 for Bonn. The second leg is scheduled for next Tuesday, October 21.
