Baghdatis lands Tashkent trophy

Tennis sensation Marcos Baghdatis yesterday won in Tashkent his third ATP Challenger tournament in as many months. In the final in the Uzbek capital, the Cypriot star defeated local star Denis Istomin 2-1 sets (6-3, 1-6, 6-3) and added another trophy to those he won in Vancouver in August and San Remy in September. The 24-year-old’s poor performance in the second set did not prevent him from winning the final, completing his triumph in one hour and 39 minutes. In the semifinal of the $125,000 tournament, Baghdatis had defeated Ukraine’s Olexandr Dolgopolov Jr in straight sets (7-6, 6-4) on Saturday. This tournament victory will give Baghdatis 110 ATP points that will take him closer to his target of ending the year in the world’s top 70. Last week, he was at number 87 and today he is set to rise to number 72 in the world rankings.
