AEK’s loss at Ilisiakos forces coach to quit

Olympiakos and Panathinaikos are joint top of the basketball league after the end of the first half of the regular season, but it was Ilisiakos, Trikala and Kavala that scored the most important wins of the weekend. Olympiakos saw off visiting Panellinios 90-70 for their first convincing performance in some time. Panathinaikos had no problems at home against Kolossos Rhodes, winning 92-60. Maroussi consolidated its third spot in the table, one point behind the two leaders, following its clear 75-67 victory over Aris in Athens. PAOK downed Olympia Larissa 66-56 at home to rise to fifth, level on points with Panionios, Aris, Peristeri and Kolossos. Panionios suffered an unexpected defeat at Kavala, going down 76-68 on Sunday. Ilisiakos triumphed at home over AEK 79-61 in a game marred by clashes between rival fans. The result also triggered the resignation of AEK coach Argyris Pedoulakis. He was replaced yesterday by veteran AEK player Minas Gekos. Trikala moved away from the bottom of the table with its 79-71 win over ambitious Peristeri.
