Women splash to third in the world

The Greek women’s water polo team finished third in the World League completed on Sunday in the United States, after defeating powerhouse Russia in the penalty shootout. The Greek team reached the final phase of the competition and made the semifinals after seeing off Hungary in the penalty shootout (14-13, including regulation time score 11-11). In the semifinals the Greeks lost to host US 9-7 and entered the third-place playoffs against European champion Russia. The game was sure to be close and regulation time ended at 5-5. It then fell to Greece goalkeeper Maria Tsouri to become the heroine for the national team as she saved two penalties in the ensuing shootout to give Greece an 8-7 victory. This is the third time Greece has stepped onto the podium of the World League, after finishing third in 2007 and winning the trophy in 2005.
