Ikaros upsets Panionios in basketball cup tie
Aris and Ikaros Kallitheas have put their names into the hat for the draw for the Greek Basketball Cup’s quarterfinal phase, thanks to their victories over the weekend. Aris defeated A2 division side Ermis Lagada 90-64 on Saturday, playing away from home but before many Aris supporters. The Thessaloniki side saw the impressive Fanis Koumpouras lead the scoring with 15 points. Ikaros Kallitheas upset the much more experienced Panionios team at Nea Smyrni yesterday with a 77-66 score, confirming that the newly promoted club from the A2 will this year be a worthy opponent for any top-flight side. Former Panionios player Yiannis Kalambokis scored 14 points for Ikaros, while forward Deon Thompson scored 19 points. The two teams, which advanced over the weekend, will join last season’s top six sides in the league in Wednesday’s draw. These are: Panathinaikos, Olympiakos, Maroussi, Panellinios, Kolossos Rhodes and PAOK.
