Tremor off Turkish coast shakes the Dodecanese
No damage has been reported on the Dodecanese from the earthquake measuring 5.8 degrees on the Richter scale on Sunday afternoon off the Turkish coast and some 80 kilometers to the east of Rhodes on Sunday afternoon.
The Head of the Regional Authority of Southern Aegean, Yiannis Machairidis, told Skai radio that the tremor was felt strongly on the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Symi and Kastellorizo, but it has not created any damage.
According to the Athens Institute of Geodynamics, the earthquake struck at 3.44 p.m. and its center was some 37 kilometers below the surface.
A few minutes later a second tremor of 5R struck the same area, the institute in Athens reported and is seen as an aftershock.
A doctor in southwestern Turkey told the Anatolia news agency that six or seven people have been admitted to local hospitals with injuries, some of them having jumped in panic from balconies and windows. No fatalities have been reported.
