Strike halts metro on Thursday

There is no service on the Athens metro on Thursday due to a strike by staff protesting pay cuts.

SELMA, one of the unions representing Athens metro employees, has said its members object to their inclusion in the unified pay structure for civil servants — a move which, they say, amounts to the abolition of their collective labor agreement.

Unionists earlier this week apologized to commuters saying they had exhausted all possibilities for negotiations with the government.

Meanwhile, central Athens streets remained closed Thursday because of the Special Olympics torch relay.
