Fewer road tax dodgers thanks to new system

The number of vehicle owners who have failed to pay their road tax for 2013 is considerably lower than in previous years, according to the General Secretariat for Information Systems.

The Finance Ministry’s agency has identified over 30,000 owners who have not paid the annual levy for their cars, lorries or motorcycles and is in the process of sending them notices to pay fines equal to double the tax they were supposed to pay by January 8.

In previous years the number of road tax evaders was above 100,000, which illustrates that the new system of payment is much more efficient than that which preceded it, with revenues also growing by 50 million euros from last year. However, the number of vehicle owners who have handed in their license plates in order to avoid paying road tax has also risen considerably this year.
