Golden Dawn MP allowed to attend Council of Europe

After consideration and despite opposition, Eleni Zaroulia, a deputy for Greece’s neofascist Golden Dawn party, has finally been given the green light to participate in the Council of Europe proceedings, the organization said Tuesday.

Greece’s PASOK and Democratic Left parties, as well as several rights groups had expressed objections to the membership of Zaroulia, who is married to Golden Dawn chief Nikos Michaloliakos.

In October Zaroulia sparked furor after referring to immigrants in the country as “subhumans” carrying “all sorts of diseases.”

In a statement Tuesday the committee said that the decision to accept her as a member does not imply support for her political ideals. The committee also OK’d the participation of Tamas Gaudi from Hungary’s far-right Jobbik party.
