Authorities investigate mercury lead in Xanthi
Authorities in Xanthi, northeastern Greece, were over the weekend investigating the provenance of a puddle of mercury that was found on a city center sidewalk on Friday, prompting the sealing off of the area.
Sources suggested the leak may have occurred nine days earlier, during the transfer of machinery from the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) to a local laboratory.
A professor reportedly attempted to clean up the spill but a colleague alerted local authorities.
