Prosecutor orders probe into illegal waste dump near Athens
An Athens prosecutor on Friday ordered an investigation into the dumping of waste, including toxic hospital refuse, at an illegal landfill in Aspropyrgos, west of Athens.
The Athens court of first instance prosecutor Panagiota Fakou ordered the probe in response to a report in Kathimerini exposing the unchecked dumping of waste at the site which is close to residential housing.
According to Kathimerini’s report, waste has piled up to seven meters high in some parts of the sprawling dump and represents a risk for the health of residents and for the local environment.
