Ex-Greek defense official admits to taking bribe for radar system
Corruption prosecutors on Thursday brought a new set of criminal charges for bribery and money laundering against Antonis Kantas, a former head of procurements at the Defense Ministry.
The 83-year-old former official already has admitted to pocketing some 16 million euros in kickbacks during his stint at the ministry between 1996 and 2002.
The new case relates to a smaller bribe – to the tune of 250,000 euros – which Kantas is alleged to have accepted from the representatives of a Brazilian supplier of parts for a radar system.
The deal, signed between the Brazilian firm and the Greek state in 2001, was worth 400 million euros.
Prosecutors are probing another eight defense procurement deals in connection with alleged kickbacks involving Kantas.
