Coast guard rescues 17 migrants off Farmakonisi

The Greek Coast Guard rescued 17 irregular migrants off the southern Aegean island of Farmakonisi on Tuesday morning.

According to authorities, the immigrants had to jump into the sea northeast of the island after the boat they were trying to reach Greece in started taking water on board. All 17 migrants are reported to be well. They have been taken to the island of Leros.

Thirty migrants were rescued off Farmakonisi last week, while the coast guard pulled another 29 people to safety off Samos on Monday.
