Athens landlord finds tenant’s mummified mother in trunk
A coroner is trying to determine the cause and time of death of a an elderly woman whose remains were found mummified in a large wooden trunk in her daughter’s apartment in the central Athens suburb of Pangrati on Thursday.
The body was discovered by the landlord and his lawyer while they were serving an eviction notice to the deceased woman’s 49-year-old daughter, a French chemist who had failed to pay the rent since 2010.
Preliminary findings suggested the 49-year-old may have used her professional knowledge to prevent her mother’s body from decomposing. The woman is believed to have died as far back as two years ago.
