Ioannina treasurer gets life term for fund theft
A criminal court on Wednesday handed down a life sentence to the former treasurer of the Municipality of Ioannina, in northwestern Greece, after finding him guilty of embezzling 1.3 million euros from city coffers.
The case came to light in the summer of 2013 following a routine inspection.
Another municipal official who had been responsible for the city’s finances was given a three-year jail sentence, which was suspended.
The former treasurer, who was not named, will appeal the verdict, his lawyer indicated on Wednesday.
In his testimony before the court, the treasurer claimed to be a victim of “fabricated accounting tricks.”
