Losses for all play-off contenders in Super League

All four clubs in the Super League play-off spots (second to fifth) suffered weekend losses as leader Olympiakos defeated PAOK, AEK lost at Atromitos, Panathinaikos was upset at home by Xanthi and Asteras Tripolis went down at Platanias.

However the weekend was marred by the ugly scenes of fan clashes at Peristeri between supporters of Atromitos and AEK, with unconfirmed reports speaking of a man getting stabbed.

On the pitch it was business as usual for Olympiakos, that had Omar Elabdellaoui scoring in the first half for a 1-0 home win over PAOK on Sunday, with both teams ending the game with 10 men.

In a moving scene before the game both sets of players laid wreaths in front of the section of the Karaiskakis Stadium where 21 people lost their lives in a stampede 35 years ago.

Brito scored the Atromitos goal that put an end to AEK’s winning streak in 2016, as the Peristeri club won 1-0 for former AEK coach Traianos Dellas to defeat his successor, Gustavo Poyet.

Xanthi produced a big result at Panathinaikos on Saturday thanks to the solitary goal by Karim Soltani and aided by a controversial straight red card shown to Panathinaikos captain Zeca at 0-0.

Panathinaikos president Yiannis Alafouzos spoke of a mafia running the Greek game and accused the government of being unable to clean up the country’s soccer.

Bottom club Kalloni Lesvou appears all-but-condemned to relegation after its 2-0 loss at Veria that has taken a leap toward staying up. Its main threat, Panthrakikos, is eight points from safety having snatched a 1-1 draw at Levadiakos.

Iraklis has made the top half of the table as its 1-0 win over PAS Giannina took the Thessaloniki club up to eighth, while Platanias saw off Asteras Tripolis 2-0 at Hania.

On Monday Panionios entertains Panetolikos.
